I remember the first time I've watched this. It was the summer of 2008. I was in my world history class, If I remember correctly. We were learning about World War II as if we hadn't learned enough over the years about how it all started and how it all ended. The teacher at the time was concentrating on Hitler. And decided to put on a movie on the Holocaust but the students weren't expecting such an astonishing, captivating movie, even in Italian everyone was reading the subtitles and watching the movie as if they were enchanted by it's heartwarming spell.
This movie was divided up in two parts Love and then the holocaust. Wait? You said it was under the Genre 'Comedy'. Yes, I did. This movie is a satire of the Holocaust... just watch it to see how it is all very well written and directed by Robeto Benigni, whom is also the main character in which you love till the very end of the film.
(may contain small amounts of spoilers, I don't believe it will ruin the movie though.)
No more then the trailer: Life is Beautiful (English Trailer)

oO1: Love
As I said, me and this movie only met by fate (if my teacher would have never played it, I may have never watched it, sadly.) I remember when I realized I had to read I was just horrified (not a big fan of subtitles), but the second you meet Guido (played by Roberto Benigni), you just love his character. And once you encounter his way of flirty doing anything he can to win the school teacher Dora (played by Nicoletta Braschi whom is Benigni's actual wife), you just cannot stop laughing. The way Benigni mixed comedy romance into the movie was just beautifully written.
Guido successfully wins over Dora's heart, even after being engaged to a fascist official. Guido leaves with her on a green painted horse that has mean things written on it (The first sign of anti-Semitism.). While I was watching this movie I forgot it had to do with a historical event, an event most people wished it never happened, the holocaust.
oO2: The Holocaust
On the second part of the movie, you meet Joshua (played by Giorgio Cantarini), whom is the son of Guido and Dora. They are finally a cute, loving family, right? Well I am sorry, to say that after the first part being heartwarming and sweet the second part starts to show the not so happy events of history.
Joshua is a cute, bright, loving, character who doesn't like baths. Though Dora is always trying to make her child do the right thing, like listening when taking a bath. Guido is a more upbeat father who tries to get him out of it. Even in events such as Joshua pointing out signs that say, "Jews are not allowed," Guido will just invent a story on the top of his head to protect his son from all discrimination and bad acts of character.
Too bad Guido, may not be able to keep his son away from this discrimination or will he?
While Dora's away, her husband and child are taken by deportation (for being Jews) and are to be sent away to the Nazi concentration camps. Even in this horrible event, Guido attempts to hide the truth by making the event to be more lightly then it is having other people in the cattle cars agree and smile to the young Joshua as if saying, everything is going to be okay while knowing it may not be. You may get emotional (depending on you way of being) for you know what is happening, yet you smile on Guido's behave.
Once Dora comes back she notices her place has been searched, looking hysterically for her husband and child she runs to wherever the deportation is at and tells them they made a mistake, but she whom is not Jewish should not be taken, but she chooses to get on the train to be with her family. Though once at camp they are separated by gender and age by then Guido convinced Joshua that it is all a game and whom every wins they are to win a real military tank. The rules get made up as time goes on. Of course Joshua, falls for it and does whatever his father tells them to do. Though "the game" is a lot more real then Joshua believes, for the conditions are real, weapons the german nazi's, everything.
